The MFD 3000 LiDAR / Scanning Edition is an ever so slight variant of the cinema addition, adding on fixed landing gear for easy deployment into the field. The same iso-damper as the cinema edition is utilized to isolate the LiDAR sensor from vibrations during flight. What is the expected flight time of the aircraft?

Depending on payload and battery size, the expected average flight time is anywhere from 10 to 30 minutes using Lithium Polymer Batteries. With a payload of just under 30lbs, utilizing 4x 6s 8,000mAh LiPo batteries will yield a 10 minute flight time with reserve.

What is the maximum operating weight of the aircraft?

We recommend flying this aircraft at no more than 55lbs.

What kind of payload can I lift while staying under 55lbs?

Utilizing 4x 6s 8,000mAh packs, pilots can expect a 27lb payload all while staying under 55lbs. This would allow the use of a fully loaded Movi Pro, or a Ronin 2 loaded with about 15lbs of camera gear and accessories. For LiDAR sensors, a 12-15lb sensor could be used with 4x 6s 16,000mAh LiPo’s and be well under 55lbs.

What’s the difference between the MFD 3000 and 5000?

The MFD 5000 was created for pilots who demanded heavy payload lifting capabilities. It’s capable of flying at an AUW of 75lbs. The MFD 3000 was created for pilots who want to save every pound possible to allow the flying of more payload, while staying under the 55lb regulated weight by the FAA.

How does a Hydrogen Fuel Cell work? What is it?

A Hydrogen Fuel Cell is – in essence- a generator, capable of creating enough electricity to power anything like a car, motorcycle, or even a drone. They have been around for over 70 years and are a proven technology for producing electricity. It utilizes a high pressure Hydrogen tank, which when mixed with Oxygen from the atmosphere, creates electricity. It is quiet and does not produce exhaust or vibration. Whereas a battery stores energy, the fuel cell actually generates electricity while onboard the aircraft.

Why is a drone the perfect platform for a Hydrogen Fuel Cell?

Hydrogen Fuel Cells are capable of producing high amounts of electricity, while remaining extremely light weight. In essence, the energy density of a Hydrogen Fuel Cell is greater than that of a Lithium Battery. In addition, a tank of Hydrogen can last upwards of 1 hour, and only requires a few minutes to re-fill. 

What happens if the Hydrogen tank runs dry in the air?

This aircraft utilizes a small Lithium battery for reserve – in the event that the Hydrogen tank runs dry while in flight. At that point in time, the Lithium battery will kick in and provide emergency power until the drone is able to land. In addition, this Lithium battery also produces an extra “power boost” when the system draws more than the Hydrogen Fuel Cell can provide while in the air.

Why is a Hydrogen Fuel Cell a great alternative to battery power or even gasoline hybrid drones?

Lithium batteries are absolutely fantastic. They are easy to use, easy to source, and just simply work. The downside to Lithium batteries is energy density. Due to current technology, only a certain amount of energy is capable of being stored in a battery. A Hydrogen Fuel Cell is a great alternative because it can produce more electricity for a given pound of its own weight (versus a Lithium battery). When it comes to alternative hybrid types- such as a Gasoline generator, the Hydrogen Fuel Cell is a great choice because it is clean, quiet, does not produce vibrations, and is easily transportable. It also does not require any tuning or maintenance.

How do I fill the Hydrogen gas tank?

There are a few ways in which the Hydrogen gas tank can be filled. One way is to sign up with a company such as IGX Group out of California, which offers a refilling service. Simply send back your empty tanks and receive filled tanks. It’s that simple.

Another avenue would allow the user to fill tanks himself. Firstly, contact a Industrial Gas Supply company such as Airgas or Praxair. They would be able to deliver a tank (K size tank, for example) which would allow you (the user) to fill your flight tank about 6 or 7 times (assuming you are using a 6L flight tank at 300 bar). The last piece of the equation would require a special pump, which would allow you to fill the high pressure 6L tank from the K type tank. This whole process would definitely be the choice for someone looking to do this for the long haul.

How safe is this technology?

Believe it or not, Hydrogen Fuel Cells are actually quite safe as a whole. The tanks are specially regulated to withstand overpressuring, drops, punctures, etc. They are also certified internationally for this exact use. Think of it like a propane tank or scuba tank. Tanks like these are used all the time for various applications and they are generally very safe assuming they are handled properly. Hydrogen gas is also lighter than air, so in the rare event of a tank bursting or leaking Hydrogen gas, the gas will evaporate into the atmosphere.

What’s the work flow with a Hydrogen Fuel Cell powered drone?

The work flow process of a Hydrogen Fuel Cell drone while at the field is relatively simple. The first order is to ensure you have the proper amount of spare flight tanks necessary to maintain flying through out the day. In addition, having a way to re-charge the tanks while on site would be another alternative.

Next, simply connect the lines from the tank to the fuel cell. Once powered on, the fuel cell will begin to produce electricity- turning on the drone. The drone will then boot up just like it would with a battery.

The fuel cell has an electronic indicator, via the UART / Telemetry / API port, which will alert the user when the gas is running low. At that time, the user would return back to the take off area, land, change out the tank, and go back up again.

Lastly, after the shooting day, the user would simply fill the tanks back up for flying the next day.

Who is the manufacturer of this Hydrogen Fuel Cell?

The manufacturer of this fuel cell is Intelligent Energy, a company located in the UK. They have been manufacturing Hydrogen Fuel Cells for over 20 years for various applications such as motorcycles, scooters, cars, and others.

They entered the UAV market a few years ago, and have already produced a 800kW fuel cell, allowing an aircraft like the DJI Matrice to fly for over 1 hour.

This new 2.4kW fuel cell is definitely game changing technology for larger aircraft carrying heavier payloads.

What is the expected cost of the MFD 3000 Hydrogen Fuel Cell edition? 

At this time, we expect the cost of the fuel cell edition to be approximately 2 – 2.5x the cost of the battery version of this aircraft. Because this is new, emerging technology, the cost is higher at the moment. With more adoption and economies of scale, we expect the cost of a Hydrogen Fuel Cell to come down in time.

With regards to cost per flight, if filling your own tanks, we estimate it will cost $6 to $10 per 1 hour of flight time, but that may change depending on the cost to acquire Hydrogen gas. If you are using a tank filling service with a company such as IGX, we expect the cost of a flight to be approximately $35 / flight. Once again, these are preliminary numbers at this time and they may change as the product nears closer to production.

When will the MFD 3000 Hydrogen Fuel Cell edition be available for purchase?

At the moment, Intelligent Energy expects to release fully operational 2.4kW Hydrogen Fuel Cells in Q4 of 2019. With that, we expect to begin flight testing soon after. At this time, it seems that the MFD 3000 H2 edition will be available in Q1 of 2020. Please remember that at this time, the aircraft is purely in a concept phase, and the actual product may change after testing and refining the system.

At this time, this drone is still in the concept phase, but is an accurate representation of Intelligent Energy’s 2.4 kW Hydrogen Fuel Cell on a real-life working aircraft. This fuel cell will be put into production towards the end of 2019. I am so excited to announce a collaboration between my company, Watts Innovations & Intelligent Energy. Intelligent Energy has recently released a 2.4kW Hydrogen Fuel Cell for the UAV market and has provided me with a prototype unit for integration into my newly announced MFD 3000 aircraft.

This aircraft is purely a concept at this moment in time, but should take flight at the end of 2019. I would expect this aircraft will be for sale in early 2020 after we have successfully completed flight testing.

How are your drones made?

All drones are made to order based on the customer’s requirements. Typically we average a 8 week delivery time. It is possible to add FPV cameras, voltage regulators, payload deployment mechanisms, retractable landing gear, etc. Please contact us with any special requests. Our aircraft are a combination of outsourced and in-house custom made parts. All aircraft are assembled in the USA from international & domestic components.

What else do you offer besides drones?

In addition to offering a customized drone for your needs, we also offer the entire package to get your aircraft up and running including radio transmitters, lithium polymer batteries (with your desired connectors pre-soldered), high powered charging solutions, battery cases, radio cases, etc. Our goal is to provide you with a fully inclusive customized drone package that will allow you to hit the ground running once you have received your drone.

Does the drone come ready to fly?

Yes, absolutely! Before leaving our facility, your drone will be fully flight tested and tuned for proper flight characteristics, performance, control “feeling”, and autonomous flight. Our flight tests are quite rigorous and are meant to detect any sort of manufacturer’s defect or error. Once the drone has been shipped and received by the customer, it is recommended to perform a compass calibration before flying.

How does the process work? How do I acquire one of your drones?

Prospective customers can contact us at any time and tell us about their proposed operation and what they are looking for in an aerial platform. Based on that, we can begin a discussion about how to provide you and your business with an aircraft that is going to fit your needs.
